| This is a cool math trick:
If you love doing multiplication problems, then TRY
THIS!
You know that
9 * 1=9
9 * 2=18
9 * 3=27
9 * 4=36
9 * 5=45
9 * 6=54
9 * 7=63
9 * 8=72
9 * 9=81
So what's my point?
Here's an easier way to remember the answers to the
problems that are multiplied by 9.
Hold both hands out.
Now you know that 9 * 2=18 right?
So look at the number that's being multiplied by 9. In this case that
would be the number 2.
Still have both hands out??
Ok good. Now put your second finger down, that
would be your pointer finger.
Now on the left side of the finger you just put down, you should have
one thumb up and on the other side you should have three fingers up on
one hand and five fingers still standing on the other hand. Let the
thumb represent the number 1 and let the other eight fingers that
are still left up be the number 8. Put them together and you get 18!!
Get it??
Let's try another one.
9 * 5=45
So I see the number that's being multiplied by 9 is
5. So put your fifth finger down on your left hand which will be
your pinky finger. How many fingers do you have up on the left side of
the finger that was put down? Four fingers. On the right hand you
should have five fingers up. Put it together and you get 45!!
Let's try one more!
9 * 9=81
I see that the number that's being multiplied by 9 is
9. So I want to put my nineth finger down. That would be my
pointer finger on the right hand. On the left side of the finger that
was put down, I have eight remaining fingers still up and on the
right side of that finger, I only have one finger up. Put it
together and you get 81!!
Pretty Cool, Huh??
Conditions
Now this only works for numbers that are being
multiplied by nine. Also, since we only have ten fingers, the numbers
that are being multiplied by nine can only go up to nine. That is, 9 *
?=(something) where ? is less than or equal to 9.
Brainstorm
When you are about to take a test, try to remember
the formulas that you've studied. As soon as the teacher gives you the
test, don't look at it right away. Write down everything you know first
on the side of the test. After doing that, it's like you're taking a
test with your notes!! But, you aren't. That's what we call
brainstorming. Try it next time a teacher gives you a quiz or test.
Good Luck!!
Taking a Test
When you are taking a test, the first thing you want
to do is brainstorm. Next, look over the entire test. See which problems
are the easiest to do. Do those problems first. Then do the harder
problems last. You never want to spend too much time doing the hard
problems. Get the easy ones out of the way so you can earn points. Then
you'll have the rest of the time to do the hard problems.
Show Your Work
If you're taking a test, doing a homework problem, or
taking a quiz, you always want to show your work. Even if the final
answer is wrong, math teachers usually give points for trying (although
your steps have to make sense somewhat).
Never put down just the answer, even if it's correct.
Again, teachers want to see how you got the answer. So it's very
important to show your work!!
